Drupal as a learning management system

Presenter: Konstantin Tovstiadi

Organization: CU Boulder

Role: Web Consultant

Track: General Presentation

Topic: Learning Management Systems

Level: Intermediate

Abstract: The talk is based on the experience of three semester long classes where Drupal was used as the main course support system. We will cover the challenges of building an LMS in Drupal, compare the results to a standard LMS like D2L, describe the experience of the students using the system, and discuss the feasibility of using the system for future courses.

Bio: Konstantin has a PhD in communication and over a decade of experience in both higher ed teaching and higher ed web development. He has worked with Drupal for 5 years and taught a class on content management systems (both graduate and undergraduate level) 3 times using Drupal as a learning management system. He currently works for CU Boulder Office of Information Technology where he provides web consultations to faculty, staff, and students.

Description: General familiarity with CMS / LMS space is a plus but technical knowledge will not be required from the attendees of this session. The talk will focus on architectural and pedagogical challenges of using Drupal as an LMS rather than on code and server configuration.
