The Generation Gap: Approaching Technology in a Multigenerational Classroom
Presenter: Courtney Osborn
Organization: Red Rocks Community College
Role: Instructor
Track: General Presentation
Topic: Social Media in Education
Level:For Mere Mortals
Abstract: Today's college student no longer fits into the ages of 18-23; it is not uncommon to see a recent graduate sitting next to a four-time grandmother. This makes using technology in the classroom slightly more complicated. This presentation discusses some of the problems and solutions faced in multigenerational classrooms. Looking at students’ perceptions of platforms such as Facebook, it is possible to create a conversation that allows all involved a way of comfortably approaching technology.
Bio: Courtney Osborn serves as an adjunct in Literature and Composition at Red Rocks Community College and Metropolitan State University of Denver. She holds a Master’s in Literature from the University of Colorado at Denver and enjoys using it to figure out new ways of approaching composition studies. As an instructor, Courtney tries to appeal to the diverse student populations at these institutions using technology and current cultural events or memes in hopes of stimulating critical thinking about writing, creation, and voice.
