Student Accountability in Hybrid/Flipped Classes

Presenter: Armando Parés

Co-Presenter: Courtney Fell

Organization: CU Boulder

Role: Assistant Dean

Track: Discussion

Topic: Effective Blended Learning Practices

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: Whether you are just about to do your first hybrid/flipped/blended class or you have done a few already, you might have thought to yourself “How do I make sure the students do the online portion of my class before coming to the classroom?”. Student accountability has been come the big challenge in the CU Boulder Continuing Education Evening program where two-thirds of all classes replace time in class with online work. Join us as we ask this question of several instructors who have done several hybrid classes.

Bio: Armando Parés is a 23-year veteran of continuing education. Over the past 2 years, the evening program that Armando administers on the Boulder campus went from a handful of hybrid classes in the summer to 50 classes each semester this past fall and spring.

Description: For over 50 years the Division of Continuing Education has offered evening classes on the Boulder campus. Over the years, instructors have struggled to keep students interested and focused in a once a week, 3-hour evening format. With the introduction of the hybrid model, shortening in class time allows for more focused and valuable time face to face. Our panel of instructors will discuss how they approached the idea of hybrids, how they evaluated the various online tools and which parts of their class they moved online and why.
