Hands On NANSLO, A Fully Actualized Remote Science Teaching Lab

Presenter: Paul (PJ) Bennett

Co-Presenter: Daniel Branan

Organization: Colorado Community College System

Role: NANSLO Lab Technology Manager

Track: Hands On Workshop

Topic: Global Education

Level: Intermediate

Abstract: NANSLO, the North American Network of Science Labs Online is a collaboration between nine institutions in the United States and Canada. NANSLO’s goal is to provide students with access to high-quality instrumentation that is used for challenging inquiry-based laboratory procedures, inside and outside traditional laboratory environments. This workshop will provide real-time access to the NANSLO lab and guide participants through laboratory exercises to facilitate the discussion of on-line laboratory procedures.

Bio: Paul (PJ) Bennett is the Lab Technology Manger for the North American Network of Science Labs Online (NANSLO) at the Colorado Community College System. Where he develops protocols, program equipment, and manages lab technicians. Previously he was an Academic Technology Consultant (2012), Assistant Director of the Graduate Teacher Program (GTP) (2011-06), and the Lead Graduate Teacher in the Department of Molecular Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB) (2001-03) at the University of Colorado Boulder. He received his bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Oregon, and PhD in MCDB from the University of Colorado

Description: Real-time online teaching laboratories require two components. Those components are the interface that allows control of the scientific instrumentation and the procedures that guide the laboratory exercises. From the users point of view NANSLO has simplified the physical interface. Our laboratory interface can be accessed using any computer platform through the Citrix plug-in. With our interface constructed the NANSLO lab is currently developing and redesigning procedures for online use. In this hands-on workshop participants will access the NANSLO laboratory and use our interfaces to facilitate a discussion of online laboratory teaching procedures. This workshop to have the following timeline:

0-10 minutes: Handing out laboratory procedures (direct participants to the Citrix plug-in if they need it)
10-20 minutes: Getting participants logged into NANSLO
20-40 minutes: Explaining the interface and its controls
40 to 70 minutes: Use our protocols to explore the laboratory, participants will also be able to ask questions about the interface and laboratory at this time.
70-100 minutes: Use the NANSLO interface to discuss ways in which online procedures are different from face-to-face procedures.
