Abstract: This session will draw from the John's experience as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and technology trainer, as well as Kim Moore's experience as an academic advisor. We'll cover the parallels between acquiring a second language and learning technology and discuss linguistics concepts such as affective filters, fluency, fossilization and jargon as they relate to technology acquisition. Target audience: faculty and instructors.  


Here is our hypothesis: "We acquire technology the same way we acquire language. Level of fluency is affected by our affective filters, demographics and access to resources such as education."

 

Bio: Kim Moore has been involved in higher ed student services in the community college setting for 15 years. She also spent 6 years goal and business coaching in private practice and for the health and wellness industry. She currently serves as an Online Student Retention Specialist-college-wide at FRCC. Some of her current role includes: academic advising, career counseling, strategic intervention, instruction, course design, technology training, project management of college initiatives.
